Think Your ADHD Brain is Broken? Here's What to Do
Wednesday Mar 13, 2024
Wednesday Mar 13, 2024
Welcome to the Self-Love Women Way podcast, I'm your host, Jen. In today's episode, we delved into the intricate ways our minds perceive ADHD and how societal expectations can weigh heavy on our self-perception. It's fascinating how we navigate through the subtle messages that tell us our brains are somehow broken and need fixing. Drawing from personal experiences, I shared moments where I found myself grappling with the need for rest while battling internal voices urging me to keep pushing forward, associating rest with inadequacy. This internal conflict, I realized, isn't unique to me but resonates deeply with many, especially women, in a society that glorifies productivity over self-care.
As we journeyed through the complexities of ADHD, I highlighted the importance of self-compassion and acceptance. While acceptance is crucial, I introduced the idea that true transformation comes from embracing self-love—cherishing ourselves despite the challenges ADHD presents. Through introspection and self-awareness, we can start unraveling the layers of shame and criticism, offering ourselves the kindness and understanding we readily extend to others. This episode encouraged listeners to explore their inner dialogue, question societal norms, and embark on the path toward self-love and acceptance.
Thank you for tuning in, and remember to share your thoughts and experiences with us. Your feedback and contributions enrich our community, fostering a supportive environment where women can embrace their uniqueness and thrive. Until next time, take care and continue nurturing the love within.

Wednesday Feb 28, 2024
In this insightful conversation with Dr. Justice, we delved deep into the intricate connections between women's health, ADHD, hormones, and trauma. Dr. Justice shed light on the often overlooked intersectionality of these factors, emphasizing the impact of undiagnosed ADHD, criticism, and trauma on individuals, particularly women. From the challenges of masking ADHD symptoms to the trauma-induced hormonal imbalances, the discussion highlighted the complex journey many women navigate in understanding and managing their health.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Justice advocated for a holistic approach to treatment, rooted in understanding each individual's unique hormonal profile and neurotransmitter balance. By emphasizing the importance of testing hormones and neurotransmitters, Dr. Justice underscored the need for personalized treatment plans tailored to address specific imbalances contributing to symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, and brain fog. Her approach emphasizes not only symptom management but also empowerment through education and self-advocacy.
Moreover, the conversation emphasized the significance of regulating the nervous system through mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and physical activity. By empowering patients to understand their health conditions and advocate for themselves, Dr. Justice aims to foster a sense of agency and control over one's well-being. Today on the show, Jen dives into the common habits of ADHD women, particularly entrepreneurs, focusing on the clutter of 'out of sight, out of mind' piles. Jen, the host, reflects on her own experiences, sharing anecdotes and insights into how these piles of tasks and books, while initially seeming like an organizational strategy, often lead to overwhelm and distractibility. Drawing parallels between parenting and entrepreneurship, she highlights the uncomfortable yet transformative nature of navigating business responsibilities and personal growth. Navigating Shame Sh*t Storms: How to Shift Out of Shame and Into Alignment
Tuesday Feb 13, 2024
Tuesday Feb 13, 2024
Hey, it's Jen! Today, let's delve into a topic that's been surfacing a lot lately: shame. In both my ASCEND program for ADHD women entrepreneurs and therapy sessions, shame has emerged as a significant theme demanding deeper exploration. While there's no quick fix for such a complex emotion, it's crucial to acknowledge it and shine a light on it.
Shame, as Brené Brown describes, thrives in secrecy, convincing us we're fundamentally flawed. Unlike guilt, which stems from actions, shame cuts to the core of our identity. It's heavy, leading to anxiety, depression, and disconnection from ourselves.
To unravel shame's grip, we must first acknowledge its presence and share our struggles with trusted individuals who demonstrate they are trustworthy through things like reliability, accountability, non-judgment, and generosity - essentially, key elements of psychological safety. Through self-compassion practices like journaling and inner reflection, we can dismantle shame's power, remembering it's a journey that often requires professional support, especially for those with complex trauma histories.
As we navigate shame's complexities, let's extend kindness and compassion to ourselves and others, knowing we're all worthy of love and belonging, regardless of the shadows we carry. Thanks for joining me, and until next time, take care.If you’re not already, be sure to follow and share!AND, follow me on social media!

Scattered Tears: How to Work with Grief and Other Big Feelings
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Hi, it's Jen. Today, I'm exploring a topic often skirted in society: grief. Reflecting on my mom's passing almost five years ago brings this issue to light. Her recent 75th birthday would have been a reminder of her love, especially during my struggles with ADHD.
Lately, I've noticed many around me grappling with significant losses, making grief feel heavier. Emotions like disbelief, sadness, and bargaining are part of the messy grieving process. Active mourning, described by grief expert Alan Wolfelt, involves feeling and working through these emotions. As I navigate my own grief journey, I'm learning to embrace its complexities and find solace in shared experiences. Grief isn't something to rush through; it's a personal journey that requires acknowledgment and compassion, both for ourselves and others.
Correction: In the podcast I mistakenly referred to David Kessler as Steven Kessler.

How to Stop Fear and Doubt From Plaguing You and Your Business
Wednesday Jan 31, 2024
Wednesday Jan 31, 2024
Hey everyone, it's Jen and I'm thrilled to have you tuning in today. In this episode, I want to dive deep into a topic that's been on my mind a lot lately: fear and doubt. I've noticed how these emotions often hold us back, especially as ADHD women entrepreneurs navigating the world of business and personal growth. We're constantly stepping out of our comfort zones, facing new challenges, and pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible. But alongside our ambition comes a chorus of internal doubts and fears, whispering, "You can't do it," or "Who do you think you are?" I want to explore where these feelings come from, how they manifest in our lives, and most importantly, how we can work with them rather than against them.
Growing up with ADHD, many of us internalized negative messages and faced criticism that shaped our self-perception. It's no wonder that fear and doubt often accompany us on our entrepreneurial journeys. But I believe that acknowledging these feelings is the first step toward growth. In this episode, I'll share strategies for sitting with our fears, understanding their underlying messages, and finding ways to move forward despite them. It's about embracing the discomfort, rewriting our inner narratives, and reclaiming our power as resilient, capable individuals. So if you're ready to confront your fears head-on and step boldly into your potential, join me on this journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Together, let's transform fear into fuel and doubt into determination. If you’re not already, be sure to follow and share!AND, Follow me on social media!Instagram: @i_am_jen_barnesTikTok: @i_am_jen_barnes
