Navigating Shame Sh*t Storms: How to Shift Out of Shame and Into Alignment
Hey, it's Jen! Today, let's delve into a topic that's been surfacing a lot lately: shame. In both my ASCEND program for ADHD women entrepreneurs and therapy sessions, shame has emerged as a significant theme demanding deeper exploration. While there's no quick fix for such a complex emotion, it's crucial to acknowledge it and shine a light on it.
Shame, as Brené Brown describes, thrives in secrecy, convincing us we're fundamentally flawed. Unlike guilt, which stems from actions, shame cuts to the core of our identity. It's heavy, leading to anxiety, depression, and disconnection from ourselves.
To unravel shame's grip, we must first acknowledge its presence and share our struggles with trusted individuals who demonstrate they are trustworthy through things like reliability, accountability, non-judgment, and generosity - essentially, key elements of psychological safety. Through self-compassion practices like journaling and inner reflection, we can dismantle shame's power, remembering it's a journey that often requires professional support, especially for those with complex trauma histories.
As we navigate shame's complexities, let's extend kindness and compassion to ourselves and others, knowing we're all worthy of love and belonging, regardless of the shadows we carry. Thanks for joining me, and until next time, take care.
